The international collective PUBlic came to a small village (Nahorany) in Czech Republic. Sleeping in an abandoned school and working inside a traditional pub for 14 days, the artists developed images from the book "I served the King of England" by Bohumil Hrabal. The residency culminated with 2 performances that took place in the pub, for a pub audience.
During the first week of the project, the collective started its' research with:
- workshops
- small performances on Hrabal's text
- laboratories on the pub as a space
- reflection & documentation
- discovering local sites
- movie nights
- attending local events such as traditional celebrations, festivals etc.
- collecting stories by pub visitors
- interviews with locals
After the research period, the collective continued with developing and rehearsing small scenes for a performance, based on images from Hrabal and local impressions. As an addition, a video production at the local sites was initiated. The characters created for the stage were brought in a different context for the creation of a short film which was later on added to the performance with live music.
The performance was presented to the audience of the pub, after rehearsals, dramaturgical suggestions and a public presentation, on the 27th of September 2012 at the Hospoda Pub in Nahořany.
